AIU Apprenticeship Program

Applications for the 2012-2013 school year Apprenticeships will be accepted beginning April 1, 2012. The deadline to apply will be May 25, 2012.

What is the AIU Apprenticeship Program?
“Apprentice” means to bind or place with an employer, master craftsman or the like for instruction.

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s apprenticeship program consists of a half-day or daylong learning experience per month over a six or seven month period during the school year. Students meet and work with professionals who share their experience, expertise, enthusiasm and zeal for what they do for a living. The program provides for hands-on, behind-the-scenes experiences and gives students the opportunities to make connections with organizations and people who can help them as they pursue their career choices.

The Apprenticeship Program has been offered since 1978. The students apply for admittance to the program in mid-May. Students describe their interest in a particular apprenticeship, why they want to participate - including what they hope to learn from the experience, - and what careers they are considering for the future. Letters of recommendation, from teachers or administrators of their respective school district, must be submitted as well as $50 application fee. Apprenticeship finalists must be self-motivated and disciplined. Students are expected to attend all sessions.
