Acting - Pittsburgh Public Theater
Students will participate in monologue and scene work covering the basics of character development, objectives, sub text and stage movement. Students will also interact with PPT theater professionals gaining an understanding of the many skils and tasks necessry for theater productions. Students attend five student matinees.

Advertising/Public Relations - Point Park University
Professionals will present the realities of advertising and public relations to students with an interest in the field and/or skills in journalism and related professions. A bit of history and discussion on the current practice will lead to some analysis of cases (successful and unsuccessful). Students will work on a campaign or a series of programs to provide advertising and public relations assistance to "a client of their choosing."
Animation - Pittsburgh Filmmakers
This course will explore various animation techniques. In class screening will provide students with an understanding of the art and science of animation. Participants will work individually and in groups to create animation projects utilizing different methods.
There is an additional fee of $45.00 for this program.
Anthropology - University of Pittsburgh
Students will be given an overview of Cultural and Physical Anthropology, and Archaeology. Introduction to contemporary concerns and high technology approaches. Students will meet with anthropology and archaeology graduate students.
Architecture - Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation
Students will be introduced to the design process and will complete a site-specific design project. They will tour downtown Pittsburgh, meet with architects, and visit Carnegie Mellon University. There will be an additional fee of $35.00 to participate in this program.
Associated Artists – Art Careers - Various Artists’ Studios
Students will be given the opportunity to learn about the challenges and rewards of a career in the visual arts from local professional artists. Students will become familiar with the variety of careers in the visual arts, including the fine arts, arts education, production education, commercial and industrial design, and graphic arts.
Astronomy - Carnegie Science Center
This program will include: development of a broad overview of current astronomical theory, familiarization with basic astronomical research techniques through participation in laboratory exercises, and demonstration of a working knowledge of the operation of a planetarium instrument.
Avian Care & Training -- Fall Session - National Aviary
Students will have the opportunity to experience the zoological field by working with the trainers at the National Aviary. Students will assist with many aspects of animal care, including: feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and training.

Broadcast Journalism - Point Park University
The goal is to introduce students to broadcast careers, as well as specific formats and style, students will meet broadcast professionals and visit radio station, TV station and a production house. The students will also get an opportunity to know what it takes to be on-air talent or work behind the scenes as a writer, producer, editor, etc.
Conducting - Heinz Hall & Duquesne University School of Music
Students will be introduced to the world of the conductor. Students will observe rehearsals of the Pittsburgh Symphony at Heinz Hall and be exposed to conducting via a series of conducting exercises.
Contemporary Dance - Dance Alloy Theater -- Dance Alloy Studios
The Contemporary Dance apprenticeship will affords students who are interested in dance the opportunity to further develop their understanding and appreciation of the contemporary dance techniques.
Digital Photography - Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
Working with digital cameras and software such as Adobe Photoshop, students will gain an understanding of the unique capabilities of digital photography. Lectures regarding composition, lighting and manipulation of the digital image will provide a solid foundation for maximizing the capabilities of photographic digital technology. Students must provide their own camera. There will be an additional fee of $45.00 to participate in this program.

The program offers a broad-based knowledge concerning the area of education. Students will observe classrooms and learning situations throughout the school year.
Engineering – PA Society of Professional Engineers - Various Sites
Students will have the opportunity to meet with professional engineers in their workplace, and gain an understanding of the similarities and differences of the many areas of engineering, i.e., civil, electrical, mechanical, etc.
Filmmaking - Pittsburgh Filmmakers
Students will be exposed to various techniques and disciplines unique to the rich art form of filmmaking. Participants will view and discuss examples of different styles of films to gain an understanding of film aesthetics and visual language. Storyboarding, composition, lighting, and editing will be explored and students will plan and shoot film in class. Final films will be screened in the Melwood Screening Room at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. There is an additional fee of $45.00 to participate in this program.
Green Design (Civil Engineering) - Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Carnegie Mellon University - Green Design Institute
How do the decisions you make everyday impact the environment? For example, is it better for the environment to drive a highly fuel-efficient car like the Toyota Corolla or would it be better to drive a hybrid gas-electric car like the Prius? Is it more environmentally friendly to buy something at the mall or online? Is it a "better" decision to carry groceries in a paper or plastic bag? What role do engineers have in answering these questions? These are questions like the ones researchers of the Green Design Institute at Carnegie Mellon University are working to answer. Sessions take place from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Students will be exposed to various careers in international affairs and to major economic, political, and societal issues in an increasingly interdependent world. Students will improve cross-cultural skills, explore study/work abroad options, and understand college/job requirements.

Expose students to the many and varied career opportunities available to them as journalists and communicators. The field includes writing and editing positions for newspapers and magazines, radio and TV broadcasting, advertising and public relations, photography and photojournalism, and new media (websites in particular).
Journalistic Writing/Reporting - Point Park University
Introduce students to reporting and writing skills required of journalists, no matter what media -- print or broadcast -- they work in on a daily basis. Students will learn how to report, interview, develop story sources, write and edit for a variety of journalistic writing formats. Those formats will include news, feature, opinion and analysis stories used in the profession.

Students will explore the world of aquatic ecosystems with the help of various professionals. From examining the physical qualities of water to studying and caring for living organisms in captivity and the wild, the students will be exposed to a multitude of career possibilities in the field of aquatic science. A fee of $32.00 payable to the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium for a session on Riverquest is due at the first session.

Nursing and Healthcare Careers - University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers
Students will meet key leaders in the UPMC system and be introduced to expected professional behavior (confidentiality, patient safety, etc.). Students will be paired with healthcare workers at a specific hospital and will work with them throughout the apprenticeship. Students will be required to purchase scrubs for $30.00 in order to participate in this program.
Opera and Voice Coaching - Pittsburgh Opera
Students will be exposed to all aspects of a professional opera company. Students will spend four half-days touring and learning about all Pittsburgh Opera departments, observing and participating in coaching sessions, and investigating requirements for careers in opera. Students may choose to participate in eight additional activities, including performance and education programs.
Pittsburgh CLO Academy of Musical Theater -- Dance Styles - Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera
The Pittsburgh CLO Academy of Musical Theater Dance Styles will celebrate a student's talent, encourage their dreams and help develop their abilities. This apprenticeship is geared toward students with an interest in pursuing dance and musical theater dance styles. Students of all levels will receive a technique class and the chance to work with a professional performer and faculty member at the CLO Academy of Musical Theater.
Playwriting - Pittsburgh Public Theater
Students will be introduced to playwriting structure, dialogue, character development and the process of getting works published and produced on stage. Pittsburgh has been called the robotics capitol of America. Come learn about the basics of the science of robotics in the largest robotics exhibit in the U.S., meet with professionals in the field, and then see if you have what it takes to design, program, and deploy robots of your own.
Screenwriting - Allegheny Intermediate Unit
Students will be exposed to the format and development of a screenplay. Topics include: the elements of screenwriting, movie analysis, writing a variety of scenes, and how to sell your screenplay.
Short Fiction - Allegheny Intermediate Unit
The purpose of this apprenticeship is to give students an arena in which to read, write and critique published short fiction and short fiction written by their peers.
Still Photography - Pittsburgh Filmmakers
Students will explore darkroom photography and learn about the work of the professional photographer. The program includes lectures as well as viewing of work ranging from photojournalism to magazine features. Shooting assignments and lab work will culminate in an exhibition of student work in the gallery at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. There will be an additional fee of $45.00 to participate in this program. Students must provide their own 35mm film camera with manual controls.
Video Production - Pittsburgh Filmmakers
Learn vocabulary, visual concepts and practical skills necessary for quality video production. Working with digital video, students will explore lighting, composition, audio recording and non-linear editing techniques. Participants will create and shoot original videos in class. There will be an additional fee of $45.00 to participate in this program.
Visual Arts -- Fiber Collage and Soft Sculptures - Society for Contemporary Craft
How do we express who we are without language? Through symbols, pattern and color. Students bring in old clothes, sports uniforms to re-purpose into a collaged fabric piece to express their own personal narrative. Wall hanging or sculptural, literal or abstract, students have freedom to create while learning a mixture of new and old fiber techniques. Sewing, collage, 2D composition and 3D form will be addressed. A lab fee of $40.00 payable to the Society for Contemporary Craft will be collected at the first session to cover the cost of program materials.
Visual Arts -- Metal Clay - Society for Contemporary Craft
Students work with metal clay artist Donna Penoyer for six sessions. A lab fee of $50 will be collected at the first session to cover the cost of program materials.
Web Design - Pittsburgh Filmmakers
This is a course in basic web design with an emphasis on creative expression. Students should have an interest in creative writing, photography, and art, as well in developing artistic content. Principles of design and page layout, planning and structuring a site and inserting media (audio, video, animation) will be explored. Software used will include Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Students will be introduced to the Macintosh operating system. Final web designs will be included in a show of student work at Pittsburgh Filmmakers.

Writing for Publication (formerly Memoir) - Allegheny Intermediate Unit
Drawing on life experience and insight, writers reach audiences through well-crafted words fueld by lessons learned. Nonfiction writing in this class will focus on the kind of personal essays/poetry published in magazines and literary journals. Creative nonfiction demands that writers not only tell about life experience, but that they think carefully and intelligently about their own lives, and that they use their writing to come to some sort of new understanding. The end product will be submitting writing for publication.

Objectives include: familiarization with behavioral characteristics and veterinary needs of zoo animals; development of an awareness of skills needed for animal care, familiarization with feeding and cleaning procedures used with a variety of animals. Each session will include a presentation by staff of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium and visits to the related animal exhibits or zoo areas.
