Does a student need to be identified as gifted and talented to apply?

The Apprenticeships are open to all students regardless of their educational standing. However,
students must be able to attend all sessions and be able to keep up with their coursework.

Do you provide transportation to the Apprenticeships?

We do not provide transportation to the Apprenticeships. We encourage students, who may have transportation difficulties, to find others to carpool.

What is the process for accepting students into an Apprenticeship?

Students are accepted based on written essay questions and teacher recommendations. Priority is given to students who attend public school in Allegheny County.

What happens to my application fee?

The application fees are used to provide a stipend to the Apprenticeship organizations. They are also used to cover administrative costs. If you are not accepted into an Apprenticeship you will receive your check back in June. Application fees for accepted students are non-refundable.

Can I be placed on a waiting list for an Apprenticeship?

Because of the popularity of the Apprenticeship program not all students will be accepted to the program of their choice. Students who are accepted are asked to call and cancel before their first session and at that time we will call the next student on our list. A waiting list will not be kept for any of the programs.

Why do some programs have additional costs?

Our Apprenticeship sponsors sometimes do not receive enough money to cover the costs of their program so they need to ask for additional money to cover expenses. These fees may cover ticket prices for theater shows or expensive consumable supplies.

What happens if I need to be absent from an Apprenticeship session?

Students need to alert the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and the sponsoring organization that they will be absent or late. Districts will be alerted when students do not show without prior notice that they will be absent.

What is the inclement weather cancellation policy?

If an apprenticeship needs to cancel due to weather conditions we will try to notify students and teachers by email as soon as possible. A cancellation message will also be left at 412.394.4193. Even though your district is closed an apprenticeship may still be happening (i.e. if a district closes for cold temperatures). If you do not receive word and a message is not left about your apprenticeship and you will be unable to attend due to the weather please leave us a message at 412.394.4193.

Who do I contact with questions about the Apprenticeships?

Questions and concerns can be directed to Amy Cribbs, Academic Events Specialist, Allegheny Intermediate Unit, 412.394.4193.
